Authentic Christianity Vol. 1: Acts 1-3

This is the first of a series of volumes which bring together Dr Lloyd-Jones’ preaching from the Acts of the Apostles. It covers texts from the first three chapters in the book which, he claimed, presented ‘authentic Christianity and nothing else.’

The Doctor was aware of how much people need ‘to know exactly what Christianity is and what the Christian church is.’ Just as many in the first century AD looked towards Jerusalem or Rome for answers to life’s problems, so people in our own time also look in the wrong direction and need to be directed to the only source of real help.

The message of Christianity is ‘Jesus and the resurrection’. The church in the Acts of the Apostles was prepared to live for this and die in it. Dr Lloyd-Jones constantly directs the reader to the same Saviour and the same life.

Authentic Christianity Vol. 2: Acts 4-5

This is the second in a series of volumes which bring together much of Dr Lloyd-Jones‘ evangelistic preaching from the Acts of the Apostles. It covers texts from chapters 4 and 5 in the book which, he claimed, presented ‘authentic Christianity and nothing else.’

The first volume in the series was enthusiastically received. The following comment is representative:

The aim of the book is to bring us back to the basics of the Christian faith. The style is crystal clear. The content is thoroughly evangelistic. The glory of the gospel shines on every page. I thoroughly commend it; truly Dr Lloyd-Jones at his best – ‘He though dead yet speaketh’. We eagerly await the other volumes.

The present volume takes up the defence of Peter and John before the council in Acts 4, the prayer of the church in the same chapter, the view of the life of the church seen at the end of the chapter, and the deceit of Ananias and Sapphira in chapter 5, powerfully applying the lessons of these passages to the mind, heart, and conscience of the reader.

Authentic Christianity Vol. 3: Acts 5-6

Why should a modern reader consider the early chapters of Acts of the Apostles? In order, says Dr. Lloyd-Jones, ‘to discover what the Christian church is, what her message is, and what she is meant to do in this world’.

In this volume, the third in the present series which brings together much of Dr Lloyd-Jones’ evangelistic preaching on Acts, the main incidents in Acts 5:17-6:8 are reviewed and their lessons applied to the mind, heart and conscience of the reader. The arrest and miraculous release of the apostles, their preaching before the council, the advice of Gamaliel, the implications of the problem described in Acts 6:1, and the emergence and testimony of Stephen are considered in turn. Dr Lloyd-Jones’ burning desire throughout is that his hearers and readers should know ‘the glory and power of the Lord, as he was preached by the early church’.

Authentic Christianity Vol. 4: Acts 7:1-29

Why should readers in the twenty-first century concern themselves with preaching from the first century? Are there not many more pressing topics to concern them than a long address given by a Jewish Christian to the leaders of his nation in Jerusalem? Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones was convinced that time spent in the early chapters of Acts, ‘to discover how the church started and what her message was at the beginning’, was well spent.

He shows that we cannot understand the gospel, or even our own history, without understanding the events narrated in Acts 7. There would be no gospel if ‘the God of glory’ had not ‘appeared to Abraham’. These stirring sermons confront the reader with the mighty purpose of God as it unfolded in Old Testament history, and particularly with the central focus and fulfilment of it all, Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of God.

Authentic Christianity, Volume 4 consists of twenty evangelistic sermons preached in Westminster Chapel on Sunday evenings between October 1966 and February 1967. In them all, Dr Lloyd-Jones directs his hearers away from the bankruptcy and confusion of modern thought to the only source of hope for his or any generation, the unchanging ‘gospel of God, concerning His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord’.

Authentic Christianity Vol. 5: Acts 7:30-60

D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones was convinced that Acts 7 is not only one of the great chapters of the Bible but one that is vital to a right understanding of what it means to be a Christian.

One of the reasons why today’s church has lost its power is because it has become so much like the world. Tragically the world has entered the church and there has been a lowering of all the standards. Behind all this is the foolish notion that Christians can win people by being like them. Yet the world remains unchanged and the church is considered an irrelevance.

But the striking feature of Acts 7 is the amazing contrast between Stephen and those who opposed him. Here is a Christian who is so different from the world – so Christlike, so uncompromising, so faithful (even unto death), yet so full of power and of the Holy Spirit that the impact of his witness on the world is still being felt 2,000 years later!

Authentic Christianity, Volume 5 consists of eighteen evangelistic sermons preached in Westminster Chapel on Sunday evenings between March and July 1967.

6: Acts 8:1-35

In this concluding volume of Authentic Christianity, Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones shows the significance of the events recorded in Acts 8:1-35 for readers today. These sermons, preached between Oct. 1967 and Feb. 1968, are full of penetrating insights on such topics as man’s need for the gospel, the work of the Spirit, the supernatural character of true Christianity, repentance and faith, the danger of spurious belief, and the very heart and centre of the gospel in the sufferings and death of Christ, as explained by Philip to the man of Ethiopia.

The series on Acts was cut short by Dr Lloyd-Jones’ illness and consequent retirement as minister of Westminster Chapel. These concluding sermons therefore gain an added poignancy from the fact that the Doctor felt increasingly unwell. However, as he ministered God’s Word he was clearly supported by his own experience of the power of the truths he commended so passionately to others.
