When i was training i was fortunate enough to have access to a library with a good selection of resources. While researching for an assignment i used a number of commentaries and found the wbc volume to strike a chord with me. Since then i tried to get the set on cd but could never find it at an attractive price. During one of the accordance sales I was fortunate enough to get this and since then it has been my go to resource. While i accept that within any series there are going to be strong and less strong volumes, i have never been disapointed with this set.
After buying other comnentary volumes i have come to realise that it is the way that each volume is structured that i find so useful. Each passage has the authors translation, then there are notes on particular words within the passage. This is followed by a section on the structure of the passage and then there is a final section on the authors thoughts on the passage. For me, this structure is helpful as i can quickly go to the part of the commentary notes i am after. I find this in particular contrast to commentaries in the pillar or nicot series where the information isnt structured so i have to read a lot of material that isn’t necessarily relevant to what im looking for. I hope that the missing volumes will be written one day.

The WBC is a great resource. I was able to purchase the entire set. As a pastor, I appreciate the format. The translation from the authors typically adds excellent insight. When I have the time to dig in or have a question about a phrase the notes are beneficial. When I am pressed for time the explanation usually succinctly highlights the most essential ideas from the text. This set does use Greek and Hebrew, though you can use the set even if you don’t know the languages. I would highly encourage other preachers to purchase this set.

The Word Biblical Commentary is an excellent technical, exegetical commentary for the serious Bible student, scholar, professor, pastor, or ministry leader. It offers a wealth of insight and is one of my most-used commentaries in Accordance.
