2 Kings provides a fast–paced narrative of insight into the history of Israel under its monarchy. This book is a continuation of the narrative begun in 1 Samuel, and continued through 2 Samuel and 1 Kings. Ralph finishes it off with a captivating and rewarding journey through 2 Kings.

Written between 561 BC and 538 BC, 2nd Kings gives us a warning about the consequences of sin, especially the catastrophic repercussions of Israel’s love affair with idolatry.

Through prophets such as Elisha and Elijah we see God’s compassion for his people and the opportunity for repentance. An opportunity spoilt by Judah, climaxing with the subjugation of the kingdom by the Babylonians.

Illuminating, accessible and laced with his unique sense of humour, Davis’ practical devotional expository applies events to the contemporary reader providing parallels to alert us in the 21st century.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Davis is a helpful guide, not least because he explains the issues with the needs of contemporary Christians in mind.

-- The Churchman, Matthew Mason

Today there is a renewed emphasis on the preaching of OT narrative in evangelical circles... The six volumes of Ralph Dale Davis of which 2 Kings: The power and Fury is the culmination are excellent guides for contemporary expositor as he preaches from the "former prophets". Davis has laid an excellent foundation; may many expositors build upon his work as they preach OT narrative.

My first exposure to Dale Ralph Davis was his 1 Kings commentary, The Wisdom and the Folly. When I started preparing my preaching series on the lives of Elijah and Elisha, I read the commentary cover-to-cover, along with a bunch of other commentaries. Hands down, Davis was the most helpful. He's knowledgeable, Biblical, and creative. Creative in his presentation, and in his desire to dig in to the passages, and find what's really there, rather than just go with the hoary old received wisdom that we've all heard a million times before.

I have to say, he turned my understanding of 1 Kings 19 (Elijah at Horeb) inside out. I had studied that passage in depth in Seminary, translating it myself, writing a research paper on it, but Davis pointed out some features of the story that had me smacking my forehead - of course! That's so vital! And I'd never seen it before.

I rushed to my laptop and ordered his 2 Kings commentary, which I've now read cover to cover. It is fabulous. Davis has a way of opening up the difficult and boring passages to show why the author included them in the narrative. I've now added all of Davis' Joshua through Samuel volumes to my wish list.

I ordered this because there are simply some accounts from this period in Israel's history that are hard to get one's Americanized head around! Dale Ralph Davis did an excellent job. Researched to the hilt with many footnotes, scholarly and yet it reads so well.
I appreciate the man's orthodoxy and uncompromising work with scripture as well as his humility and clear commentary. This is one of those commentators you read and find that you'd very much like to hang out with in person. Fans of CS Lewis might find Davis writing much like an American version of Lewis brilliant observations.

This is the sixth and final commentary that my daughter and I have read together by Mr. Davis. I am so sad that we are now finished with his writing and need to find the next one to read. We both enjoy his writing style and since of humor as well as all the wonderful history stories he weaves into his commentaries. They are simple enough for the lay person as well as jr. high and above children but would also be a great asset to any pastor's library.

Dale Ralph Davis has done it again! Once more, he has given us an excellent preaching resource as he takes us through still another of the Historical Books, taking us on a verse by verse journey that is both textually astute, carefully crafted, and wonderfully practical. Davis has taught seminary courses on how to preach from the Older Testament and he fills each of his books with material that is both true to the text while at the same time being practical and "preachable." This book is a "must have" for the serious preacher and/or student of the Bible.

Wonderful book and highly recommended. It is easy to read and understand.
Nothing dry and boring here.

I had been told that Dale Ralph Davis had written some excellent commentaries that are very enlightening, enjoyable, and good for devotional reading. I got this one as I was writing a research paper for a seminary class and while it is not a highly academic commentary it was the most enjoyable one I used. Davis weaves humor and anecdotes into his work and has great insights into the text.

Another excellent commentary from Dale Ralph Davis. I absolutely devour his books and consequently have tons of notes written all over the margins of my Bible. Great book from a great teacher--and it helps that he gets me laughing while he's teaching!

I had done a study with the book on 1st kings. Decided to continue with this one. Dr Davis has the heard of both a pastor and an intellectual. Full of great stories that really open up the bible to the group.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what you'd expect from Dale Ralph Davis!

If you're debating what commentary you should buy on 2 Kings, then stop debating and buy this one! By all means buy the more scholarly one if you must, but you'll be missing out on much that is good and you won't have as much fun in your study. So if you are going to buy only one this is the one to get. Not only will you find that you get much out of the text when reading this. Very often when I'm been working on the passage and I have managed to get a basic outline down I found that I get 3 to 4 times more out of this and some other commentaries when I've taken additional notes, it's that good! As I have said before I will also guarantee you'll enjoy your study a lot more due to the considerable wit and wisdom of Dale Ralph Davis! This series of commentaries from Christian focus is always good value for money but particularly when the author is Dales Ralph Davis as he has a way of often getting right to the heart of the passage and drawing valuable teaching and application from it. This is certainly a very good place to start if you are preparing talks and Bible studies for any age group and it certainly has enough depth if you are preaching a sermon series on 2 Kings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sehr guter und leicht verständlicher Kommentar

Fazit: Absolut empfehlenswert.

5.0 out of 5 stars Accessible commentary on 2 Kings
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 14, 2013
As with his commentary on Joshua, in this commentary on 2 Kings, the author has managed to bring out the meaning of the text, addressing relevant academic debates concisely yet convincingly, acknowledging but avoiding irrelevant debates, while somehow finding space to bring home lessons for life in today's world, using pithy imagery. This commentary is accessible, readable, thorough, concise, clear, and useful. Highly recommended for those who simply want to understand and apply the lessons of 2 Kings.

Read everything by DRD! This is a great commentary on 2 Kings. By the end I understood the important message this book of the bible teaches us: God will fulfill all his words, whether words of blessing or words of judgement. He keeps his word, always.
