Biblica is published by Global Book Publishing, which “specializes in producing large, high quality reference books for markets around the world” (publisher’s website). The book is clearly aimed at a general readership rather than an academic market. The forward explains that Biblica “takes the reader on a fascinating journey through the landscapes, cultures, and history of the Bible lands” (13). The goal of the volume is “bringing the world of the Bible to life” and “enabling the reader to better visualize and appreciate the incidents and narratives within the biblical text” (13). Biblica contains contributions by an international team of Jewish, Catholic, and Protestant scholars who, according to the foreword, range “across a wide theological spectrum” (13). The text includes an introduction followed by eight parts, which include: (1) “Geography and History of the Bible Lands”; (2) “Genesis and the Patriarchal Period”; (3) “The Judges”; (4) “The Kings”; (5) “The Prophets and the Righteous”; (6) “The Conquest of the Kingdoms”; (7) “The Life of Jesus of Nazareth”; and (8) “Spreading the Word.
