This is an excellent non-technical commentary on Ephesians written by an expert on this who comes from the Mennonite tradition. Yoder Neufeld is especially effective as incorporating the insights of the more technical commentators up to the time of publication. While he argues that Ephesians is a pseudonymous letter written in Paul’s name, this does not diminish the Scriptural or canonical authority of Ephesians for Yoder Neufeld. In contrast to a commentator like MacDonald who sees an agenda in Ephesians as that of more tightly drawing the boundaries between insiders and outsiders and a focus on ecclesiology, Yoder Neufeld reads Ephesians through a missional lens. Very helpful are the sections on biblical theology and the text in contemporary context. For example, following 1:3-14, we get a biblical theological discussion of election following the exegesis and, after that, guidance on how we should teach this biblical theme today. Even if you aren’t from a peace church tradition, this is a very helpful commentary to consult to expose you to perspectives you generally do not get in commentaries written by Evangelicals.
