In this book Michael Daise identifies ten quotations in the Fourth Gospel that share features which can be used to sort them into three clusters. Three are explicitly ascribed to Isaiah. Three are deliberately said to have been 'remembered' by Jesus' disciples. And four are cast as prophesies fulfilled during Jesus' crucifixion.

Daise engages the exegetical issues raised by each of these quotations, and traces the literary and theological implications which resonate from the interrelationships that occur between them in these larger groups of quotations. The Isaianic quotations form an inclusio to the Book of Signs which models the Jews as both called by, yet kept from, Jesus' public ministry. The 'remembrance' quotations do the same within the Book of Signs but, by contrast, depict Jesus' disciples as having been pneumatologically illumined to a new, eschatological order after his resurrection. And the quotations cited during Jesus' crucifixion are all fulfilled by soldiers beneath the cross, thus serving to dramatize the Johannine christology that Jesus died at his own behest - that is, that, despite appearances to the contrary, Jesus' crucifixion was his own, self-wrought sacrifice.
