Over twenty-five years in the making, this much-anticipated commentary promises to be the standard study of Proverbs for years to come. Written by eminent Old Testament scholar Bruce Waltke, this two-volume commentary is unquestionably the most comprehensive work on Proverbs available.

Grounded in the new literary criticism that has so strengthened biblical interpretation of late, Waltke's commentary on Proverbs demonstrates the profound, ongoing relevance of this Old Testament book for Christian faith and life. A thorough introduction addresses such issues as text and versions, structure, authorship, and theology. The detailed commentary itself explains and elucidates Proverbs as "theological literature." Waltke's highly readable style -- evident even in his original translation of the Hebrew text -- makes his scholarly work accessible to teachers, pastors, Bible students, and general readers alike.

I am a retired professor and have been studying the book of Proverbs for many years. I knew this was considered the definitive commentary on the book and understood why once I began reading it. This is a must-read for any serious student of Proverbs.

This really is the standard on Proverbs. Other commentators quote this volume continuously. Great depth on every verse explaining the style and type of prose and clear explanation of the meaning. Expensive but definitely worth it. I love it.

This work gives detailed translation of the very first order to the last half of this Biblical text which puzzles many. Dr Waltke's work provides amazing insights into what are often difficult passages. He brilliantly draws together texts from various sections of Proverbs that deal with the same subject, illuminating and adding to our understanding.

The commentary is top notched but marred by MANY typos and words spelled incorrectly. For the money, I expected a much more thorough proofreading!

This Commentary is the conservative commentary to own for study of Proverbs. Waltke demonstrates the life pursuit and love of the book through careful and extensive detail of each verse. The introductory notes provide the proper framework to engage Proverbs and the commentary.

5.0 out of 5 stars a lifetime's insights

Waltke has spent his life studying Proverbs and this is the fruit of his reflections. Perhaps his major contribution is to show how the book of Proverbs is constructed and how the placement of the proverbs cross-illuminates and develops the thought train. Most commentaries work over the same ground but this one is seminal. This commentary may be expensive but buy the two volumes and you won't need anything else in your library on the Proverbs.

Waltke gives the usual NICOT overview on the book, the author & sets it in time. He then with obsessive attention to detail comments on every verse. The two volumes represent the finest academic work on this difficult area of scripture and deliver information in context that a Masters student or a Pastor would want. I commend both volumes of this work to you.

It seems to me that this commentary is the best book on the Book of Proverbs I have seen and read in years. I understand that this is the most comprehensive commentary on the Proverbs available today. It is well written and combines a plentiful of references. Waltke's writing applies both to the intellectual and daily life experience.
