Matera (The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.) ist bereits durch umfangreiche Studien zur neutestamentlichen Ethik und Christologie hervorgetreten. In diesem neuen Werk legt er eine Theologie des Neuen Testaments unter der Fragestellung ihrer Vielfalt und Einheit vor. Sein Ziel ist es, Studierenden, Kollegen, aber auch Systematikern eine Art Synthese der Theologien im Neuen Testament unter dem Leitbegriff der ‚diverse unity’ vorzulegen. „The expression ‘diverse unity’ refers to two aspects of New Testament theology. On the one hand, there is an undeniable theological diversity in the writings of the New Testament that we cannot and should not dismiss. On the other, for those who read the New Testament as a witness to God's self-revelation in Christ, there is an inner unity that binds these writings together. It is this inner unity, which resides in the diversity of the New Testament, that I have sought to uncover” (xvi).
