In this addition to the award-winning BECNT series, a respected New Testament scholar offers a substantive evangelical commentary on 2 Corinthians. George Guthrie leads readers through the intricacies of literary structure, word meanings, cultural backdrop, and theological proclamation, offering insights applicable to modern ministry contexts. As with all BECNT volumes, this commentary features the author's detailed interaction with the Greek text, extensive research, thoughtful chapter-by-chapter exegesis, and an acclaimed, user-friendly design. It admirably achieves the dual aims of the series--academic sophistication with pastoral sensitivity and accessibility--making it a useful tool for pastors, church leaders, students, and teachers.

Quite heavy lifting for a layperson due to the Greek. Yet his writing is beautiful and the Reflection sections which end each chapter are worth the price of the book. If you want to be intellectually and spiritually challenged, invest in this commentary.

I like the BECNT series (and it’s Old Testament counterpart, the Genesis volume of which I reviewed early this year), and 2 Corinthians is growing on me in terms of Epistles that I find particularly spiritually nourishing. Guthrie writes well, engages robustly with the Greek, and in my view strikes a helpful balance between engagement with secondary sources, and sticking to the text at hand. It would be a solid choice for pastors and preachers wanting something more substantial as an aid to sermon preparation. 4/5

Guthrie’s commentary is one of the most readable and useful commentaries for pastors who want clear exposition, fair judgements on debated issues, and sensitivity to life issues in ministry today. He provides a sensible theory of Paul’s opponents that has helped me better navigate this letter. [Full Review]
