I bought this for a class and it was a challenging read. This was probably the most technical commentary I've personally read. Maybe 25%, or more, went over my head. I gave it 5 starts because i feel Mr Allen did a great gob for what it is and the 75% i did get was very good. If you have some Greek under your belt and are well versed in grammar and syntax there's a lot for you here. Also, the time he spent covering the 6th chapter of Hebrews was very helpful. As a classical dispensationalist, i didn't agree with some of his progressive dispensationalist views. But still i felt he gave a well rounded fair presentation of the subjects. Highly recommend for the right reader.

This is one of my favorite commentaries on the book of Hebrews. I trust the scholarship of Dr David Allen, who has dedicated many years to the study of Hebrews and its authorship. Having been a student of Dr Allen's during my time at seminary, I know him to be a dedicated scholar and a skillful preacher.

I was especially interested in this commentary for two main reasons:
1) Dr Allen has long advocated the position that Luke wrote Hebrews - this was his doctoral thesis many years ago. Now in this commentary, Dr Allen expounds on the authorship of Hebrews (one of the more thorough discussions I have read on the topic), and why it is that he believes Luke to be the author.
2) I have heard Dr Allen preach on some passages in Hebrews. He is a preacher and a professor of preaching. As such, he writes from a perspective, not simply of a scholar, but of a pastor and teacher.

Thank you to Amazon for carrying the NAC bible commentary series. Review matched both the book and my expectations from previous NAC series purchases.

A little dry, but great info.

This is a technical (rather than semi-technical or sermonic) commentary which is very well footnoted for those who want to dig deeper into any given section or issue. Although anyone can glean from this commentary, it is slow going without a firm grasp of Greek.

As for the two main questions asked of Hebrews: Allen leans toward Luke as author, and does not take a clear stand on the meaning of the warning passages (the four basic views are: 1-genuine believers losing their salvation, 2-genuine believers losing reward, 3-unbelievers never making the full commitment to become saved, or 4-theoretical / hyperbole i.e. empty threats to motivate genuine believers).

This is a brilliant commentary. The author has clearly put in a lot of hardwork into this commenary and his understanding of the Greek is exceptional and he is spot on when interpreting the warning passages, and i am truly thankful for his commentary. Its a been a great blessing to me and the church i attend, i would thoroughly recommend it to anyone studiying the Book of Hebrews

I am teaching Hebrews this quarter and this commentary has been a great help. A little technical for someone who never studied Greek but it has helped me to learn more. It was another great tool in my treaching. Thanks for making it available.

I heard the author speak recently and was most interested in his perspective. Although the commentary itself is good, the very long introduction is, to my mind, worth the price of the book.
