This is the perfect commentary for someone who want to study in depth the Word of God. I ordered if for the Colossians commentary. This answered questions that I had and found no where else. I would recommend this book to anyone who is serious about studying the Word of God beyond the superficial and cursory of a study bible. While not disparaging those helps, this will take you into realms a layman doesn't necessarily go. I don't understand everything he says, but Hendriksen does a wonderful job of explaining things.

I am preaching through the book of Colossians, and Hendriksen has been very useful in explaining the more the difficult words and passages.

Like the other volumes in the New Testament Commentary series, the one on Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon is easy to understand and quite accessible to the layperson. I like the fact that Hendriksen sets the more technical issues, including any discussion of Greek words, apart from the main body of the commentary. Thus, the general reader is not burdened by matters that may not be of personal concern, while at the same time the NT scholar can investigate these issues. Hendriksen's introductions to these five books provide important background information, such as authorship, place of writing, purpose, date, and so forth. This is a commentary worth owning.
